The American Music Show

From Jazz To Rock 'n' Roll

The American Music Show, presented by Portland's finest jazz musicians/educators, traces the musical journey of America's only original art form, jazz, from it's origins in New Orleans up the Mississippi River to the heartland of America. This fast moving show explores the musical and historical development of this American art(jazz) form through live performance.

The show start off with a New Orleans Mardi Gras Parade that leads them from the festive atmosphere of New Orleans Bourbon St. to the sweet sounds of Louis Armstrong's solo trumpet on "West End Blues". The tempo shifts and the show jumps into the "Swing Era" where the students are invited to kick up their heels and swing dance, creating a dance hall atmosphere of the 40's. As we lead into the "Bebop Era" of the 50's, the students are led in a brief 'rehearsal' and participation in the classic be bop song,'Salt Peanuts'. The show moves to the fusion of jazz and rhythm and blues to the evolution of Rock'n Roll with a performance of Rock Around the Clock.

This musical journey of American Music is presented to your school in a 45 minute presentation. Your students will be entertained by this presentation and will walk away with a better understanding of this American art form. Study guides will be given to the school several weeks before our arrival so that teachers have the option to review the material that will be presented. The study guide will also have a follow up lesson which will include questions posed to the students about the performance.

Thanks to the financial support from the Assistance League of Salem , The American Music Show had the opportunity to visit 22 elementary schools (over 30 shows) this year in the Salem area.

"Let me start off by giving you an A+, you were awesome as the students wrote in many, many thank you notes of which I would like to share with you. The American Music Show was one of our outstanding performances. I have received wonderful comments from the school staff and our own members viewing the show at each of the 22 schools. You were most accommodating for our tight scheduling and a pleasure to work with, for which I thank you. We would appreciate an annual update on your programs for the future.

Sincerely,
